Music Styles and Lesson Content

Lessons are offered for guitar, lap steel, bass, mandola, mandolin, banjo, ukulele and cigar box guitar tuition, alongside classical / rock music theory, composition, music technology and demo recording. 

Coda Guitar caters for players of all ages and abilities, and covers styles to suit students’ musical tastes: from rock to metal; jazz to blues; country to folk; indie to pop; funk to reggae; classical and more..

You can learn at your own pace whether it’s for fun, following accelerated learning, working towards grade exams, following GCSE and A-level courses, or if you need help with auditions.

Lessons are often based around learning songs which reflect students’ tastes, and which introduce new techniques to help development (see the Lessons page for more information).

Music Grades and Locations

Tuition for passing grade exams is offered for RockschoolRGTABRSM  and TRINITY syllabuses (exam centres located in Wakefield, Barnsley and Leeds). Students can complete grades on: electric rock/pop guitar; acoustic rock/pop guitar; classical guitar; ukulele; electric bass guitar; classical and rock/pop music theory.

Students are welcome from across West Yorkshire, including: Wakefield; Pontefract; Castleford; Ossett; Dewsbury; Barnsley; Batley; Huddersfield and Leeds. Please contact if you’re interested in Skype lessons or wish to discuss learning from home.

Areas covered in guitar lessons include:

  • picking and fretting hand technique for general playing
  • lead guitar – riffs and scales / solo techniques / improvisation
  • rhythm guitar – open chords / barre chords / power chords / strumming techniques
  • fingerpicking and hybrid picking for classical / folk / blues and jazz styles
  • rock techniques – sweep picking / tapping / harmonics
  • theory, composition, demo recording and music production
  • guitar maintenance including string changing and set ups

Areas covered in bass lessons include:

  • fingerstyle and plectrum technique at beginner level and above
  • slap technique at intermediate level and above
  • fretting hand technique
  • bass lines using riffs (from scales), and following chord progressions
  • improvisation – how to play solos and fills
  • advanced techniques – chord playing / tapping / harmonics
  • theory, composition, demo recording and music production
  • bass guitar maintenance including string changing and set ups

Areas covered in ukulele lessons include:

  • learning famous songs in different styles
  • playing chords and strumming techniques
  • fingerstyle and plectrum techniques
  • how to use scales to play melodies and riffs
  • ukulele maintenance including string changing

Areas covered in music theory lessons include:

  • exam preparation for ABRSM (classical), and Rockschool or RGT (rock/pop), syllabuses
  • exam preparation for grades 1 to 8
  • support for GCSE and A level music, coursework and exam preparation
  • general theory accompanying instrumental lessons including: reading notation; scales and chords; composition and arranging

Areas covered in banjo lessons include:

  • 5 string technique using open G tuning
  • 4 string tenor banjo technique in C tuning or Irish G tuning
  • fingerstyle and plectrum technique
  • conventional banjo styles including: Bluegrass, Irish Folk, Trad. Jazz
  • how to play and adapt famous songs for the banjo
  • banjo maintenance including string changing and set ups

Areas covered in mandolin lessons include:

  • plectrum technique and developing picking fluency
  • playing chords and strumming technique
  • how to use scales to play melodies and riffs
  • playing in different styles
  • how to play and adapt famous songs for the mandolin
  • mandolin maintenance including string changing and set ups

Areas covered in cigar box guitar lessons include:

  • lessons for both 3 and 4 string guitars
  • standard GDG 3 string tuning plus alternate tunings
  • standard GDGB 4 string tuning plus alternate tunings
  • plectrum and fingerstyle technique
  • how to play notes with a slide
  • how to play effective blues progressions
  • how to use scales to play melodies and riffs
  • playing chords and strumming technique
  • how to play and adapt famous songs for cigar box guitar
  • CBG maintenance including string changing and set ups

Areas covered in lap steel lessons include:

  • different tunings including: C6 for country and jazz; open G / D for blues and roots
  • fingerstyle technique, including using thumb / finger picks
  • slide / bar technique for the fretting hand
  • playing chords and single note melodies using a bar / slide
  • playing songs in different styles, including adapting famous songs for lap steel
  • lap steel maintenance including string changing and set ups
